Board of Directors, 2012

Ken Bennight, Chairman

Ken is a husband, father, lawyer, former Marine, native Texan, and has lived in San Antonio since 1979.  He identified as a Republican for many years, but became disgusted with the party’s failure to respect limited government. He believes strongly in individual liberty, limited government, low taxes, free markets and a strong national defense.

John Bell

John is a corporate trainer in San Antonio.  He served in the USAF for 24 years, during which he worked in behavioral research, academic leadership, Pentagon staff, and command positions.  He holds a doctorate in educational administration and is an adjunct faculty member at a local university.  He and his family have been active in the Tea Party since the beginning.

Sharon Hall, Secretary

Sharon is a wife, mother and grandmother, who strongly believes in the mission statement of the San Antonio Tea Party, has been active in the organization since 2009, and is willing to put time, effort and energy–along with other like-minded supporters–to help regain and retain our freedoms.

Allen Tharp

Allen has worked for over 25 years with the restaurant industry.  Within that group he has served as a liaison for Government and Legislative Affairs, as a speaker at various restaurant industry conferences and is an active member of the President’s forum. With a B.A. in political science, he is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of a company in San Antonio as well as a minority partner in a chain of quick service chicken restaurants called Golden Fried Chick. It is noteworthy that his endeavors provide over 800 local jobs to San Antonians and pumps almost thirty million dollars into the local economy annually.

George Rodriguez, President

George Rodriguez – President, San Antonio Tea Party

George Rodriguez became the first Hispanic president of a Tea Party when he was elected president of the San Antonio Tea Party in March 2011.  Born in Laredo, Texas, and raised in San Antonio, he has dedicated his life to sharing conservative values with Hispanics.

As a Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush appointee, George worked with the Department of Justice in community relations and immigration outreach.  He also worked with the White House Office of Public Liaison on community outreach, with Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) on judiciary legislation and Hispanic-related issues, and with Congressman Tom Delay on Hispanic outreach.  He was part of the 1988 Bush Presidential Campaign, and then worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as a special assistant to HUD Secretary Jack Kemp and later as an office director.

George was part of the Katrina Recovery Program as an anti-fraud compliance officer, and then worked for the City of San Antonio as a real estate director before retiring in 2010.  He served as the Harris County GOP Chairman of Outreach from 1999 through 2000.

George graduated with a degree in Political Science from Brigham Young University, and has certificates in Community Planning from DePaul University and Harvard University, as well as a certificate in Public Administration from West Virginia University.

In addition to leading the San Antonio Tea Party, he continues to speak and write to further conservative policies and ideas.

Regarding The SATP Mission – Statement from Chairman of the Board

We have been criticized recently for communications that at least tread close to the line of candidate advocacy. While the San Antonio Tea Party, Inc. can and does advocate on issues, it is improper under its tax status to advocate for individual candidates.

The Board intends to adhere scrupulously to the limits placed on us. We apologize to those offended by previous communications that were at or near the line. We assure you that we intend to police this issue more closely and appreciate that the issue has been brought more forcefully to our attention.

To those who are frustrated by the limitation, we understand and sometimes share the frustration. But the rules are what they are. We did not create them, and we cannot be all things. We intend to focus on what we are lawfully permitted to do and do it to the best of our abilities.

Thank you.
Kenneth Bennight
President
